If you are a gaming enthusiast, then you would definitely have heard of Contra. Well, guess what! ‘Contra’ is back. And this time it is on android. Which means you can play it anywhere, anytime and anyhow. Bored on the train? No need to worry. Just whip out your phone and start playing!
‘Contra’ was developed in 1987 by Konami as a gun and run sort of game. It was originally meant as an arcade video game. A newer version was released in 1988 as well, incorporating several changes into this classic game. This time, it was released for Nintendo Entertainment System as a home version. Post that, several versions of Contra have come and gone.
The game has two characters Bill and Lance, both of them commandos on an important military mission. The evil enemy Red Falcon Organisation sets up their base camp in an uninhabited island on New Zealand. The protagonists have to overthrow these enemies and uncover the true nature of the aliens controlling this organization. The game was popular because it allowed two players to simultaneously play it, a unique feature for those times. The standard weapon of the game is a rifle with unlimited ammunition.
So what’s new with the latest version?
The setting has been changed to the dark interiors of the South African Amazon jungle. You can also choose from a wide range of characters in this latest version. However, the news is not all good. The announcement that Konani would be shifting entirely to mobile games came with the parallel announcement that it would be stopping all console game development. The new Contra series will be made in partnership with China’s Tencent.
