The previous subscription cost of Netflix was basic plan- Rs. 499 and premium plan was- Rs. 799. These plans allowed the users to play Netflix on their Television, computers and laptops. However, witnessing the increasing demand and popularity of this online video streaming application, the Netflix authorities have now finally launched their Netflix Mobile Only Plan at just Rs. 199 for a month.

It was on Wednesday, that the new low-priced plan of Netflix for mobiles only was launched in India. The authorities of Netflix also disclosed that it was after months of testing and checking, the plan was finally ready to roll out. Coming to the plan, it offers users only SD streaming and is only available on mobiles and tablets. This new plan is said to be cheaper than the previous one of Rs. 499. According to the sources, we have been informed that the main target audience for this new plan of Netflix were Indian people.

Views on the new plan

We can say that, launching this new plan has proved to be a successful move to creative its presence in such a market where data consumption on mobiles is the highest. It has also been informed to the media that, Netflix has no plans to expand this Rs. 199 mobile only plan to other countries except India.

When asked Netflix about their motivation behind coming up with such a plan, the employees working with Netflix claimed that the number of people signing up from mobile are the highest in India than any other country. Also, it can be inferred that Netflix plans to compete better with other online streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and HotStar.

As informed above that this plan was under testing for a very long time. The first subscription fee decided for this plan was Rs. 250.

Ajay Arora, Director, Product Innovation, Netflix said;

“Our members in India watch more on their mobiles than members anywhere else in the world – and they love to download our shows and films. We believe this new plan will make Netflix even more accessible and better suit for people who like to watch on their smartphones or tablets – both on the go and at home.”

The company said to its shareholders;

“We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU is low (below $5). We will continue to learn more after launch of this plan.”
