Airtel Launches 4G Service in Leh, Dras and Kargil in Ladakh Region of J&K

The largest telecom operator in India Bharti Airtel has announced the rollout of 4G services in Kargil, Dras and Leh. As per Airtel, the launch covers 130 towns and villages in the Ladakh region. However, the launch of 4G service has not been very easy for Airtel.

It is worth mentioning that this region is one of the most extreme places in our country. From temperature beyond zero degree Celsius to extreme weather and harsh terrains, Ladakh has all. But then Ladakh is also one of the most amazing places on the earth due to its marvelous scenery. Every year a lot of travelers travel to J&K and Ladakh is one of the prime destinations of the state.

Connectivity has always been an issue for the travelers. Because even in the major places of Ladakh you can only expect 2G connection for basic calling. Even that too is provided by only a few carriers and internet connectivity was almost nil. In other places of Ladakh, there is either no telecommunication at all or you get only satellite phones. The Tourists will not be only to be benefited by the launch of 4G service. As the local people will also be to connect to the internet and have a better experience.

This rollout of 4G services is a part Airtel’s Project Leap – Airtel’s network transformation initiative. An airtel executive said, “Customers in 130 towns and villages, including Kargil, Leh, and Dras will now be able to enjoy affordable high-speed data services and get on to the digital superhighway“.

Popular spots like Kargil War Memorial, Sangam, Magnetic Hill, Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Thiksey Monastery, Alchi Monastery, Lamayuru Monastery, Moon Land Lamayuru, Sakti towards Pangong Lake, Stok Palace and Hall of Fame along with several other places are covered under the project.

Moreover, last week an agreement with the Department of Telecom (DoT) Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) has been signed by Airtel. Under this agreement, Airtel will be setting up mobile services in identified uncovered villages in the states of Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. About the launch Ajai Puri, Chief Operating Officer (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel said:

This is a major milestone for India and for Airtel. Having pioneered 4G rollout in India, Airtel has been committed to expanding its high-speed data networks to every corner of the country and contribute to the Government’s Digital India vision. As part of Project Leap, we will continue to channel investments towards building a world-class future-ready network that touches every Indian.
