Samsung Galaxy S9+ Beats Google Pixel 2 Camera in DxOMark Rating

Samsung Galaxy S9+ and S9 finally launched in Mobile World Congress 2018 just a few days back. No wonder everybody was waiting for this big release from Samsung and with S9 and S9+ the company improvised a lot. However, there are no such major changes in design except the position of the fingerprint sensor. In addition, it runs on top of the line specifications and so on. Whereas, the company claimed that the camera performance improved significantly and promised a “reimagined” camera experience.

Samsung has indeed lived up to its promise as DxOMark showed that Galaxy S9+ has the best mobile camera ever. DxOMark now rated the S9+ camera as the best on a smartphone and rated it 99 points. If you remember the Google Pixel 2 was the previous best with 98 points followed by the iPhone X with a score of 97. In contrast to, Samsung’s older flagship the Galaxy Note 8 scored an overall 94.

If you can’t remember Galaxy S9+ camera specifications, here is a quick reminder from us.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ features a dual 12-megapixel camera on the back. One is the regular one and the other one is the Telephoto lens. The primary camera sensor comes with a mechanically adjustable aperture which can switch between a very bright f/1.5 to a smaller f/2.4 depending on exposure conditions. While the 12MP secondary rear camera with f/2.4 aperture allows the user to take portrait shots.

The bright aperture lets in 28 percent more light than the S8’s f/1.7 lens and the f/2.4 aperture is said to help prevent overexposure in bright scenes, such as a sunny outdoor day. The camera will be able to switch between apertures when necessary. Also, you will be able to manually control them using the PRO mode in the app.

The camera also includes second-generation dual-pixel autofocus tech for faster and more reliable focusing, improved multi-frame noise reduction for a claimed 30 percent better low-light performance, and the ability to record slow-motion video at up to 960 frames per second (at 720p resolution).

DxOMark Rating Explained:

Now coming back to the DxOMark rating, DxOMark says that the Galaxy S9+ camera hasn’t got any obvious weaknesses. It performs very well across all photo and video test categories. The Galaxy S9+ got a whopping score of 104 points making it the best. While the video score of 91 indicates that there is still room for improvement in that section. Google Pixel 2 still lead in video department with a score of 96.

DxOMark praised the Galaxy S9+ camera performance, especially in low light conditions. In addition, the Galaxy S9+ clicks great photos in bright and sunny conditions, with bright and vivid colors and a wide dynamic range. There seems to be good noise reduction and retention of detail. In addition, the review also noted limited grain in images with optimum brightness.

The DxOMark also took the Bokeh and Zoom features into account and test results show that it performed much better than the pixel 2. All credit goes to the second lens but however, Google Pixel 2 performs exceptionally well for a single-lens camera.

On the video part, It gave a great performance with color reproduction, autofocus capabilities, exposure, and stabilization. However, the camera seems to have provided an underwhelming texture production in videos as well.

DxOMark concluded the camera test by saying:

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ is a smartphone without any real weaknesses in the camera department. In both still and video modes, it performs well across the board, delivering consistently good photo and video image quality in all light and shooting situations, thus earning itself our highest DxOMark Mobile score to date. Add one of the best smartphone zooms and a capable bokeh simulation mode to the mix, and the Galaxy S9 Plus is difficult to ignore for any photo-minded smartphone user. With the Galaxy S9, Plus Samsung is setting the pace for 2018. We’ll see if the competition can follow suit.
