Windows 10 Redstone 5: Upcoming Features and Fixes

Windows 10 is now ready to launch their new Redstone 5. Which means it’s time to start poking around to see what we can expect to see in Microsoft’s next update for Windows 10 Redstone 5, scheduled for release this fall.

Microsoft has today pushed a new Windows 10 Redstone 5 build for those in Skip Ahead ring. The Build 17627 is now available and can be installed on the PCs enrolled to Skip Ahead.

This new build for Windows 10 Insiders bring some fixes, changes, and improvements in itself. All the changes and fixes and knows issues are given below in the details.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 – Improvements, and fixes for:

  • We fixed an issue where If you try to open a file that is available online-only from OneDrive that hasn’t been previously downloaded to your PC (marked with a green checkmark in File Explorer), your PC could bugcheck (GSOD).
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Emoji Panel not working on the last two flights.
  • When a process in Task Manager is suspended or has suspended child processes, you’ll now see an icon indicating as much in the Status column of the Processes tab.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 – Known issues:

  • If you open Settings and clicking on any links to the Microsoft Store or links in tips, Settings will crash. This includes the links to get themes and fonts from the Microsoft Store, as well as the link to Windows Defender.
  • When opening .html or .pdf files from the local system (double-click, right-click > open), Microsoft Edge will not render the loaded content if Microsoft Edge wasn’t already running before opening the file. To work around the issue, you can open the file again without closing Microsoft Edge.
  • On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected.

Whats coming next?

As we know Microsoft already stated that it plans to release two feature updates to windows 10. Microsoft releases one big update in March or April and the other in September or October. The Redstone 5 is expected to be finalized sometime in September 2018, with an official release in October. Here are some features that you can expect to see this fall.

Windows 10 Redstone 5: Features

Cloud Clipboard

This new feature allows you to copy text or a document and have that copied item saved to the cloud for pasting on other devices. This feature will be optional of course and will work on Windows 10 PC, IOS, and Android.

Cloud Clipboard was originally expected in Redstone 4, however, due to time constraints, Microsoft decided to wait and give Cloud Clipboard in Redstone 5. But we’ve heard from sources that Cloud Clipboard could get pushed back again if the infrastructure for it isn’t ready in time.

Windows ‘Sets’

Sets is a feature which is already out in Redstone 5 for Skip Ahead ring. Not only in Redstone 5, the Insiders were able to test an early version of Sets during the development of Redstone 4. However, Sets was never put down as a feature coming in that release. Microsoft opted to wait longer so that it could bake Sets more before releasing it to the public.

Sets allow users to group apps and websites under the same window, just like how tabs work in a web browser. Sets extend this same tabbing experience to more than just websites, allowing apps like Word, PowerPoint or Slack to be grouped together under one Set that can then be shared across devices with Timeline. It’s a productivity enabler and is a significant change in how we use our PCs.

Control Center:

We already know that Microsoft was working on a new Control center for  Windows 10 since 2017. The goal is to get all the quick actions and system toggles under one pop-out menu available in the System Tray on the taskbar. Sources say that Control center will be a big change that involves cleaning up the taskbar and System Tray and that the first instance of this effort is scheduled for Redstone 5.

The Control center will be released with this release, and it will be located to the right of the taskbar. The Quick action section will be out of the Action Center and into Control Center. With it other toggles and sliders such as volume and other system information. This area will allow you to control system elements such as brightness, Wi-Fi, Focus assist and more.

New Search Experience:

You might have a great search experience in the upcoming Windows 10 Redstone 5. Microsoft has been working on this new UI for some time. The company might move Cortana into the Action Center n Windows 10. You might have noticed this in Redstone 4 also a lot of the work is already done.  so it’s not too hard to imagine that more will show up in Redstone 5.

This new UI search look was already seen in Redstone 4 thanks to a registry edit that enables it in Redstone 4. This new UI search will be evolving in the Redstone 5 as it has been made more clear.

Other than these few features Windows 10 Redstone 5 will bring improvements in Microsoft Edge, Fluent Design, My people, and the Action Center. We may also see Windows Core OS make an official debut with the Andromeda device, which is rumored to launch in this fall.

This was all about the New Redstone 5 Improvements and fixes. Let us know what do you feel about it. We will keep you updated about the coming features and update.
