The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is a conference held annually by Apple. Apple uses the event to showcase its new software and technologies for software developers. For many years, WWDC was hosted at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, but starting in 2017, Apple moved to the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.
Like every year Apple held this Software event but this time apple included hardware category as well. This year Apple announced software updates for their devices like the iPhone, iPad, Mac desktops and laptops, Apple TV, and Apple Watch. Notably, Apple also announced the new Mac Pro which is an insanely powerful computing device along with the Pro Display XDR. So let’s get started with a quick summary of the whole event.
iOS 13
First, we need to embrace the new iOS 13 so the new iOS 13 just got even better. The new iOS 13 brings Improved Performance, Dark Mode, Advanced Photo and Camera Features, Sign In with Apple, an All-New Maps Experience, Faster App Launch, Smaller App Download Size and more.
Notably, a system-wide dark mode is given iOS and apps a beautiful dark color scheme which will deliver a perfect experience in low-light conditions. The dark mode is integrated throughout iOS, from built-in apps and settings to system-level views. Furthermore, there is an API that lets third‑party developers implement dark mode in their apps also.
All-new Photos tab will let you browse your photo library with different levels of curation. In addition, there is also a powerful photo editing tool. It includes different filters, Exposure, Brilliance, Highlights, Shadows, Contrast, Brightness, Black Point, Saturation, Vibrance, and much more controls as well. The same set of customization will be also available for the videos.
Maps got a major redesign. Now you can explore cities with an immersive 3D experience that lets you pan around 360 degrees and move seamlessly down streets. It will now show more information and can also calculate the estimated time of arrival.
Siri’s voice sounds a lot more natural and Siri can read and reply to messages via your AirPods. Now you can sign in to apps and websites quickly and easily using the Apple ID instead of relying on Facebook or Google.
Performance improvements make the entire system more responsive with faster Face ID unlock. App Store reduced the download size of apps by up to 50 percent, app updates would be up to 60 percent smaller. iOS 13 will be available for iPhone 6s and later and iPod touch (7th generation) in the fall.
iPadOS
Apple wanted to distinguish the tablet experience from the iPhone so iPadOS comes as the solution of that. It is a tailor-made OS for Apple’s tablets to deliver a more seamless experience. The new OS comes with text editing gestures, external drive support, more responsive Apple Pencil, and a lot more. Notably, it will also allow supporting mouse, both wired and wireless, on an iPad.
The first change over iOS that you’ll notice in iPadOS is on the home screen. It also revamped the multitasking experience. Keep multiple apps at the ready in Slide Over and quickly access your favorites with just a swipe. You can now open multiple windows from the app in Split View.
Apple Pencil’s latency is as low as 9 milliseconds. You can quickly take a screenshot using Apple Pencil by dragging it from either bottom corner. You can now easily browse files deep in nested folders in the new column View. iPadOS now offers desktop-class browsing and Siri offers suggestions based on websites in your browsing history, frequently visited sites, links sent to you in Messages, and more. Apart from this, the iPadOS include all the features available in iOS 13.
iPadOS will be available for iPad Air 2 and later, all iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation and later and iPad mini 4 and later this fall.
macOS Catalina
Furthermore, Apple also introduced its new macOS Catalina which will be the next generation of the macOS. It will be replacing the iTunes app with three new apps- Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV. The new Apple music is said to be faster and easy to use. The new TV app packs support for Apple TV channels, personalized recommendations. In addition, it can access the iTunes movies and TV shows, and 4K HDR playback with HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos.
Apple Podcasts will provide users with access to the usual catalog of podcasts with an option to get notified when a new episode drops. It will also allow users to search through the audio content of podcasts. Most noteworthy, macOS Catalina will support the iPad as a secondary display using the new feature called Sidecar. Hence the users can extend their Mac’s screen to enhance productivity.
Apple is also bringing voice control feature to macOS that will allow users to control everything on their Mac by just using their voice. Notably, it will be working system-wide.
Apple watchOS 6
The company also launched its latest watchOS 6 that includes new features to health and fitness, new dynamic watch faces, native App Store support and more. watchOS 6 adds a new Cycle tracking app for women which allows logging important information related to them. It is also available on the Health app on iPhone running the latest iOS 13. A new Noise app will help the user to understand the sound levels in environments. Notably, it will send a notification to the user if the decibel level reaches 90 decibels.
The App Store will be available in watchOS 6 so users can install any app from it. It also features dynamic watch faces like Modular Compact, Solar Dial, California, Gradient and Numerals faces.
Apple tvOS 13
The tvOS 13 brings new home screen, new screensaver, Apple music lyrics, support for Xbox One and PS4 controllers and more. It will now give a better recommendation over your choices made earlier. tvOS also, allows users to switch accounts, and they will also be able to sync devices, access settings and much more from the Control Centre. It will also give on-screen lyrics while playing a song. Apple also added support for Xbox One S and PlayStation controllers allowing gamers to take advantage of Apple Arcade subscription. Apart from this, it will also feature a collection of 4K HDR screen savers including mesmerizing creatures and scenes captured from the depths of oceans around the world.
Mac Pro
WWDC 2019 brings the much-awaited upgrade of Mac Pro. It comes with a stainless-steel space frame with an aluminum housing that lifts off for 360-degree access to the entire system and lattice pattern to maximize airflow and quiet operation.
This new Mac Pro is an insanely powerful computing device. It features Intel Xeon processors up to 28 cores (56 threads) 2.5GHz (Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz). In addition, It comes with 66.5MB cache, up to 2TB 2933MHz memory support. Mac Pro features a high-performance memory system with a massive 1.5TB capacity. It comes with powerful GPUs including AMD Radeon Pro 580X / AMD Radeon Pro Vega II / Two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo, each with 64 compute units and 4096 stream processors. It supports up to 4TB of SSD storage encrypted by the Apple T2 Security Chip with up to 2.6GB/s sequential read and 2.7GB/s sequential write performance. The New Mac Pro is priced at $5,999 (Rs. 415490 approx.) and will be available in the fall.
Apple Pro Display XDR
It is 32-inch (6016 x 3384 pixels) 218 PPI 16:9 IPS LCD screen with oxide TFT technology, 1600 nits peak brightness, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, P3 wide color gamut, 10-bit depth for 1.073 billion colors. The entire screen stretches edge to edge with just a 9 mm border. In addition, it features a 2D backlighting system using 576 full array local dimming zones. It has an industry-leading polarizer technology that maintains exceptional color and contrast when viewing from different angles. XDR display comes with an optional Pro stand that provides both tilt and height adjustment, and also allows Pro Display XDR to rotate into portrait mode. The Pro Display XDR is priced at $4,999 (Rs. 346220 approx.) and the Pro stand will cost $999.
