Ookla Report: Fixed Broadband Speeds in India, A Closer Look at Digital India

Ookla is a web service that provides a free analysis of Internet. The company recently released a report on fixed broadband speeds across various cities, states and union territories in India. Furthermore, India ranked 67th in terms of the global average speed of fixed internet connection with an average speed of 20.72 Mbps.

To get a closer look, they have looked into the average download speeds in every state and union territory. That showed Speedtest results for more than 100 users in February 2018. So the company has put a list altogether of 20 large cities in India showing the fixed broadband speeds in India.

Ookla Report Analysis:

According to the report, Chennai has the fastest fixed broadband speeds of the 20 largest cities in the country. However, Karnataka is the fastest state among all the states. Chennai’s download speed of over 32.67 Mbps for fixed broadband. In addition, it is 57.7 percent faster than the rest of the country’s average. Bengaluru took the second place with the download speed of 31.09 Mbps. Clearly, cities in the southern part of the country averaged better when it came to fixed broadband speeds. Kolkata ranked 6th with an average download speed of 20.39 Mbps. Mumbai ranked lowest among the four big metros with an overall ranking of eighth, with a fixed broadband download speed of 17.10 Mbps.Broadband Speeds

Furthermore, Oookla report says that Patna is the slowest city compared to the rest of the country. It speeds averaging 62.4% slower than the country’s average. Most noteworthy, download speeds in Kanpur, Lucknow, Pune, and Nagpur are significantly lower than that of their respective states.

As far as overall states are concerned, Karnataka ranks on the top position with an average speed of 28.46 Mbps and Tamil Nadu is ranked second with an average speed of 27.94 Mbps. The report mentions that the average speed in Karnataka is 37.4 percent faster than the country average. Mizoram is the slowest with a mean download speed of 3.62 Mbps, which is 82.5% slower than the rest of India. While, Manipur is on the second-last position with an average speed of 4.30 Mbps and Tripura offers 4.52 Mbps. Broadband Speeds

Especially relevant, The Global speed average for fixed internet connections is 42.71 Mbps. Singapore topped the list with an average speed of 161.53 Mbps where India has an average speed of 20.72 Mbps. When it comes to mobile broadband speeds, India stands in 109th place. India has an average download speed of 9.01 Mbps and 3.66 Mbps upload speed.
